AIA Critical Illness Cover explained: benefits, limits and the fine print

AIA's standalone CI plan covers 39 illnesses with a sum assured you choose between RM50,000 and RM250,000, renewable yearly to age 70.

AIA Critical Illness Cover is a standalone critical illness plan sold by AIA Malaysia, bought directly online rather than as a rider on a bigger policy, and pitched as basic and affordable critical illness protection rather than a comprehensive package. Here is what AIA's own product page and policy contract state about it, as at the date shown in that material.

The basic structure

The plan is yearly renewable, meaning it is not a fixed long-term contract but is renewed annually, up to age 70. Entry age is 16 to 55 years old. You choose your own sum assured within a published range of RM50,000 to RM250,000, and the plan covers a stated list of 39 critical illnesses.

What it pays

  • A lump sum on diagnosis of one of the 39 covered critical illnesses, at the sum assured you selected when you bought the plan.
  • An advance payment for angioplasty and certain other invasive treatments, paying 10% of the coverage amount, capped at RM25,000, and limited to one such payment under the policy.

What is not published on AIA's product page

A few details that matter for comparing this plan against others are not stated on the page reviewed for this article:

  • Whether there is a separate early or intermediate stage benefit distinct from the angioplasty advance payment described above.
  • The specific waiting period before a claim becomes eligible.

What is published is a survival period: a covered diagnosis or surgery must be followed by at least 15 days of survival before the claim becomes payable. This is a standard feature of critical illness products generally, intended to distinguish a genuine critical illness claim from what is effectively a death claim, and it is worth understanding before relying on the plan, since a rapid deterioration within that window can affect what is payable.

Where the policy contract governs

AIA's product page gives an overview, but the policy contract is the document that spells out the full list of 39 covered conditions, their exact medical definitions, and the complete terms of the advance payment benefit and any exclusions. Since medical definitions for conditions like a heart attack or a stroke are often written narrowly and specifically in critical illness policies generally, reading the full contract, not just the product page summary, is the only way to know exactly what would need to be true at diagnosis for a claim to succeed under this specific plan.

What to check before buying, and why we are not recommending a sum assured

We cannot tell you that this plan, or any specific sum assured within its RM50,000 to RM250,000 range, is the right choice for you, since that depends on your existing cover, your dependants and your budget. What is worth checking against your own situation:

CheckWhy it matters
The full list of 39 covered conditions and their definitionsDetermines whether conditions relevant to your family history are actually included
The 15-day survival periodAffects what happens if deterioration is rapid after diagnosis
Renewability to age 70This is a yearly renewable plan, not a fixed-term guarantee; check what happens to premiums as you age
The RM25,000 cap on the angioplasty advance paymentA partial payment, not a full claim, for that specific class of treatment

Our critical illness comparison is a way to check this plan's structure, including its yearly renewable format and survival period, against other standalone CI products.

Talk to an advisor

Because this is a yearly renewable plan rather than a fixed long-term one, and because the medical definitions behind the covered conditions are detailed in the contract rather than the product page, it is worth having someone go through both with you against your own health history before you commit to a specific sum assured. Find an advisor through the advisor directory, or ask our assistant to explain a term in the policy contract.
