Car Protect360 explained: benefits, limits and the fine print

HL Assurance's comprehensive motor plan pairs workshop flexibility with a halved excess at approved workshops. Here is what it covers and what to verify before buying.

Car Protect360 is HL Assurance's comprehensive motor insurance product, built around a specific pitch: keep the freedom to choose your own repair workshop, but reward you with a lower excess if you use one of the insurer's approved workshops instead. The figures below come from HL Assurance's own published product page as at the date shown there, and can change β€” the product's disclosure documents, not this article or the marketing page, are what governs any actual claim.

What kind of plan this is

Car Protect360 is a comprehensive car insurance plan, the broadest of the standard motor insurance tiers in Singapore. It covers the compulsory third-party liability layer, own-damage to your vehicle, fire and theft, and a set of additional benefits and allowances built into the product.

Key benefits as published

  • Choice of workshop. You are not restricted to a panel; you can send your car to any workshop you choose.
  • Halved excess at approved workshops. The own-damage excess is reduced by half if repairs are carried out at one of HL Assurance's approved workshops, giving a financial reason to use the panel without removing the option to go elsewhere.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance.
  • Daily transport allowance of S$50 a day, for up to 10 days, if repairs take longer than 3 days, capped at S$1,000 overall.
  • Unlimited windscreen cover, subject to a S$100 excess per claim.
  • Personal accident benefits: up to S$20,000 for the policyholder, S$10,000 for an authorised driver, and S$10,000 per passenger.
  • Medical expenses: up to S$1,000 each for those covered under the personal accident benefit.
  • Other extras: towing up to S$500, and authority to repair up to S$300 without needing separate insurer approval first.

Where the fine print matters

A few areas on the published page are worth checking directly against the policy wording rather than assuming from the summary alone:

  • What "approved workshop" means in practice. The discount on excess only applies at workshops on HL Assurance's own approved list, which is published and updated periodically β€” check the current list rather than assuming a workshop you have used before is still on it.
  • NCD Protector is optional, not automatic. No-claim discount protection for policyholders on 50% NCD, which shields your discount on a first claim, is an optional add-on rather than a feature built into the base comprehensive plan.
  • Personal accident limits differ by who is in the car. The policyholder's own sum insured (S$20,000) is double that of an authorised driver or a passenger (S$10,000 each), a distinction easy to miss if you assume everyone in the vehicle is covered equally.
  • Loss-of-use only kicks in past a repair threshold. The daily transport allowance is only payable if repairs take more than 3 days, so a quick, minor repair job will not trigger it even though the car is briefly off the road.

What a buyer should check in general, beyond this product

Whichever comprehensive motor policy you are comparing, a few things are worth confirming before assuming two quotes are equivalent:

  1. The excess structure at your usual workshop, not just the discounted rate at an approved one, since that is the rate you will actually pay if you use a workshop outside the panel.
  2. How your existing no-claim discount carries over if you are switching from another insurer.
  3. Whether personal accident and medical expense benefits inside the motor policy are enough, or whether you separately hold standalone personal accident cover β€” the two typically do not duplicate, and a motor-bundled benefit is scoped to accidents involving the insured vehicle only.
  4. The exact windscreen and towing sub-limits, since these are the benefits most likely to be used even in a year with no major accident.

None of this is a comment on whether Car Protect360 is the best or cheapest option for you β€” that depends on your own driving pattern, workshop preference and claims history. Talk to an advisor

Figures on an insurer's own product page are a starting point, not the final word β€” the policy wording and product summary govern any actual claim, and both can be updated after this article is written. A licensed advisor can confirm the current terms directly with HL Assurance before you buy. Find one through our advisor directory, or ask our assistant to compare this plan against another motor quote you have received.
