Flood coverage in Malaysia: is your home actually protected?
Standard fire policies exclude flood by default. With monsoon losses rising, here is how the special perils extension works.
Every monsoon season I meet homeowners who discover, too late, that their fire policy never covered flood.
A basic houseowner policy in Malaysia covers fire, lightning and domestic explosion. Flood, storm and landslide are special perils that must be added as an extension, typically for a small additional premium of around 0.086 percent of sum insured for flood.
Check three things: whether your policy schedule lists the flood extension, whether the sum insured reflects current rebuilding costs, and whether contents are covered separately from the building.
If you have a mortgage, the bank's fire policy protects the bank's interest in the structure — not your renovations or belongings.
Ten minutes reviewing your schedule beats a claim rejection after the water rises. General education only; confirm specifics with a licensed advisor.
