MaidPlus (Standard) explained: benefits, limits and the fine print
MaidPlus (Standard) is MSIG's entry-level, MOM-compliant helper insurance plan. Here is what the published benefits and price actually cover, and what they do not.
Employing a foreign domestic worker in Singapore comes with a legal requirement to hold specific insurance for her, and MaidPlus (Standard) is MSIG's entry-level plan built to meet that requirement. Because MOM sets minimum thresholds that any compliant policy must meet, comparing maid insurance plans across insurers is really a comparison of how far above those minimums each plan sits, and at what price.
What MSIG's published material states
According to the insurer's own page, MaidPlus (Standard) is priced at S$585.33 for a 26-month term, for a helper aged 50 or below, inclusive of GST. The 26-month term matches the standard work permit period, which is a practical convenience: renewing insurance in step with the permit rather than on a separate annual cycle.
The published benefit schedule includes S$60,000 a year of hospital and surgical expenses for the helper, S$60,000 for accidental death or disability, S$1,000 of medical expenses connected to the personal accident cover, S$10,000 of repatriation expenses if she needs to be sent home, and a S$5,000 security bond in the form of a letter of guarantee to MOM, which is the mechanism that satisfies the bond requirement without the employer tying up S$5,000 in cash. Beyond the worker's own cover, the plan states S$5,000 of employer or third-party liability, S$500 toward the cost of a replacement helper if needed, S$300 for termination and re-hiring costs, and a S$30-a-day benefit toward wages and levy if her work is interrupted in circumstances the policy covers.
The S$60,000 hospital and surgical benefit meets what MSIG describes as the MOM medical floor, which is the point of a "Standard" or basic-compliance plan: it is built to satisfy the regulatory minimum rather than to provide materially more.
What sits above the base plan
MSIG's material also references optional add-ons on top of the Standard plan, including a waiver of counter indemnity priced separately at S$54.50, plus options to add employer's liability cover beyond the base S$5,000 and to reduce the co-payment the employer would otherwise carry on a claim. Whether these add-ons are worth the extra cost depends on your own risk tolerance and the likelihood you would need a claim materially above the base limits, which is worth thinking through before assuming the Standard plan is sufficient simply because it is compliant.
What is not stated on the summary page
The specific policy exclusions, the exact definition of "employer's liability" and what it covers or excludes, and the detailed claims process are set out in MSIG's brochure and policy document for MaidPlus, not the summary page. These documents are what actually govern a claim, and the brochure in particular is where the optional add-ons and their pricing are explained in more detail than the headline summary.
What to check before buying
- Does the S$60,000 hospital and surgical benefit, and the S$1,000 personal accident medical benefit, actually match what you would expect to pay if your helper needed significant medical treatment, or would you be exposed above those limits?
- What does the S$5,000 employer or third-party liability actually cover, and is it enough given your household's specific arrangements?
- Is the S$5,000 letter of guarantee to MOM the full extent of the bond requirement, or does your situation require anything additional?
- Are the optional add-ons, the counter indemnity waiver and the liability or co-payment enhancements, worth the extra premium for your household?
Where the documents govern
The figures stated here reflect MSIG's own published material as of the date shown on the insurer's page. Insurers revise pricing and benefit schedules from time to time, and MOM's own minimum requirements can also change, so confirm the current price and terms directly with MSIG or a licensed representative, and check MOM's current requirements, before relying on any figure here. Talk to an advisor
Whether the Standard tier is enough, or whether the Premier tier or specific add-ons are worth the extra cost, depends on your household's own risk tolerance and your helper's specific circumstances. A licensed advisor can walk through MaidPlus's brochure against your situation. Use the portal's advisor matching to find one, or ask our assistant about a specific benefit you want explained.
