Roadside claims 101: what to do after an accident in Malaysia
The first hour after an accident decides how smoothly your motor claim goes. Here is the checklist I give every client.
Nobody plans to use their motor cover, so almost nobody knows the claims drill when it matters. Save this checklist.
At the scene: make sure everyone is safe, switch on hazard lights, and take photos before moving the vehicles if it is safe to do so — positions, damage, road markings, the other car's plate. Exchange names, IC numbers, phone numbers and insurer names. Do not admit fault at the roadside; that is for the insurers to determine.
Within 24 hours: lodge a police report. In Malaysia this is mandatory for any accident claim, and delays can jeopardise the claim entirely.
Call your insurer or takaful operator's hotline before authorising any tow. Most operators have panel workshops and approved towing; using a random tow truck that appears at the scene is the single most common way claims go wrong. If your plan includes roadside assistance, use it.
Decide which claim route applies. If the other driver was at fault and is insured, you may claim against their policy (third party) or use your own comprehensive cover and let the insurers sort out recovery — ask your advisor which protects your no-claim discount.
Keep every receipt: towing, the police report fee, alternative transport if your plan covers it. Submit promptly — most operators expect complete documents within a set window.
A good advisor earns their keep on claim day. If you are not sure what your current policy actually covers, that is worth a conversation before you need it.
