Singlife Health Plus explained: benefits, limits and the fine print

Health Plus is Singlife's rider that caps what you pay out of pocket on a Singlife Shield claim. Here is what the product page states and what governs at claim time.

Singlife Health Plus is a rider that attaches to Singlife Shield, the insurer's Integrated Shield Plan. Like any IP rider, it does not replace Singlife Shield β€” it sits on top of it, specifically to reduce the deductible and co-payment a policyholder would otherwise pay when a Shield claim is made.

What the product page states

According to Singlife's own published material, Health Plus:

  • Caps out-of-pocket costs at S$9,500. This is the headline figure the insurer publishes for the rider, describing the maximum a policyholder pays out of pocket on a claim once the rider applies, rather than the deductible and 5% co-payment structure that would otherwise apply under the base Shield plan alone.
  • Attaches to Singlife Shield Plan 1, 2 or 3, following whichever ward class and hospital access (Private Cover, Private/Public, or Public options) the underlying Shield plan provides.
  • Includes a Recovery Support benefit of up to S$20,000 over two years, for home nursing and rehabilitation costs, available where the policyholder also holds the Singlife CareShield add-on.
  • Offers a 20% No Claims Discount where no claims are made during the assessment period.
  • Provides free child cover under the Public option, as part of a family discount arrangement described on the insurer's page.

The published price for Health Plus is not stated on the product page reviewed for this article β€” unlike the base Shield plan, the rider's premium depends on the Shield plan tier it attaches to and the policyholder's age, and is confirmed at quotation rather than published as a single headline figure.

How to read the S$9,500 cap correctly

An out-of-pocket cap is a different promise from "no co-payment." It means that once your own payments toward deductible and co-insurance on a claim reach the stated cap within the relevant period, the rider covers the remainder, rather than the rider paying every dollar of co-insurance from the first claim. Exactly how the cap is calculated β€” per claim, per policy year, or across a specific assessment period β€” and how it interacts with the base Shield plan's own deductible and co-payment structure is set out in the rider's policy contract rather than the product page summary, and is worth reading in full before assuming what the cap covers in a specific claim scenario.

What to check against any IP rider, not only this one

  • Whether the cap applies per policy year or differently, since this affects what happens if you have more than one significant claim in the same year.
  • Whether rider premiums are payable by MediSave or cash only β€” rider premiums for Integrated Shield Plans are generally payable in cash, unlike the underlying Shield plan's own premium.
  • What the Recovery Support benefit actually requires β€” it is described as available with the Singlife CareShield add-on, meaning it may not be included by default with Health Plus alone.
  • How the No Claims Discount is assessed, and whether a single small claim during the assessment period affects it.
  • Whether switching to a different insurer's IP later would let you carry over a similar rider, since riders are generally tied to the specific insurer's Shield plan and are re-underwritten if you switch.

This article summarises what Singlife's own published material states about Health Plus; it is not a claim that this rider is the best or most cost-effective way to manage co-payment on any specific Shield plan.

The documents that actually govern

The product page is a summary of the plan's features. The Singlife Shield Policy Contract and the FAQs for Singlife Health Plus published by the insurer set out the actual terms, exclusions and claim mechanics, and take precedence over the summary here or on the product page. Figures and features are stated as at the date reviewed and can change β€” confirm current terms with Singlife or a licensed advisor before relying on them.

Talk to an advisor

Whether Health Plus's cap structure suits your Shield plan and expected claims pattern better than another insurer's rider, or no rider at all, depends on your ward class choice and claims history. A licensed advisor can walk through the current policy contract with you. Find one through the portal's advisor directory, or compare current Shield riders in our health plan comparison.
