SOMPO TravelSafe+ explained: benefits, limits and the fine print

Berjaya Sompo's TravelSafe+ offers unlimited emergency evacuation and lounge access on flight delays. Here is what the published plan tiers actually cover.

SOMPO TravelSafe+ is Berjaya Sompo's travel insurance line, sold as both single-trip and annual multi-trip plans across three coverage tiers. The figures below come from the insurer's own published product page as retrieved in August 2026; Berjaya Sompo can change benefits, tiers or pricing at any time, so always check the current product disclosure sheet before buying.

The three tiers, at a glance

TravelSafe+ is structured around Elite A, Elite B and Elite C plans, which scale down together across the main benefit categories:

BenefitElite AElite BElite C
Overseas medical expensesRM500,000RM300,000RM150,000
Emergency medical evacuationUnlimitedUnlimitedUnlimited
Trip cancellationCoveredCoveredNot stated as covered

Personal accident cover also scales by tier, ranging from RM100,000 to RM250,000 across the three plans; the insurer's page does not spell out the exact figure at each tier, so check your quotation for the amount that applies. Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation is unlimited across all three tiers, which is a notable feature since evacuation costs are one of the few travel-related expenses that can run into hundreds of thousands of ringgit for a genuinely serious incident abroad.

Coverage area options

Buyers choose from four coverage areas: Domestic, Area 1 (Asia-Pacific), Area 2 (worldwide excluding the United States and Canada), and Area 3 (worldwide, including the US and Canada). This tiered geographic structure lets a traveller pay for the area they actually need rather than a flat worldwide rate, and the domestic tier is worth knowing about specifically for anyone whose travel is mostly within Malaysia.

Features specific to this plan

A few benefits are called out distinctly on Berjaya Sompo's own product page rather than being standard across the market:

  • Sompo Smart Delay. Complimentary airport lounge access is provided once a flight is delayed by just one hour, a lower threshold than many travel policies use for their delay benefits.
  • COVID-19 medical cover up to RM500,000, alongside a specific COVID-19 cancellation benefit and an overseas quarantine allowance.
  • Cruise coverage and 24/7 worldwide assistance are included as standard features.
  • Automatic extension of cover if you are hospitalised or your flight is delayed beyond the original policy period.
  • Entry is available up to age 79 across the plans, and personal accident cover ranges from RM100,000 to RM250,000 depending on the tier chosen.

Trip cancellation cover, and loss of deposit or cancellation cover specifically tied to COVID-19, are stated as applying to the Elite A and Elite B tiers; the insurer's page does not list cancellation as a stated benefit for Elite C, so anyone considering the entry-level tier specifically for cancellation protection should confirm this directly against the current PDS before buying. Baggage damage and delay cover is similarly stated for Elite A and Elite B.

What is not on the public product page

Berjaya Sompo does not publish a price for TravelSafe+ on its product page; the premium depends on the plan type, tier, coverage area, trip duration and traveller's age, and is generated at the point of quotation. The product page also does not spell out every claim condition, waiting period or specific exclusion, which is why the insurer publishes separate, more detailed documents for each plan variant.

Where the fine print actually lives

Berjaya Sompo publishes distinct product disclosure sheets and policy wordings for the single-trip and annual variants, including separate annual documents for policies issued before and after 22 December 2025, since the annual plan's terms changed on that date. Where the product page's summary and a disclosure sheet or policy wording disagree, the document governs, not the marketing page. Anyone comparing quotes or making a claim should read the disclosure sheet and policy wording that match their specific plan type and purchase date, rather than relying on the headline benefits listed on the website.

What to check against your own trip

Before buying based on the tier names alone, confirm which coverage area matches your actual itinerary, whether your destination and trip length fall within the policy's limits, whether cancellation cover is included at the tier you are choosing, and whether any pre-existing medical condition you have is excluded under the current policy wording.

Talk to an advisor

Travel plans differ in exactly which benefits apply at which tier, and the details that matter most only show up in the disclosure sheet. A licensed advisor can check TravelSafe+ against your specific trip and compare it with other travel plans on the portal.
