Travel Protect360 explained: benefits, limits and the fine print

HL Assurance's Travel Protect360 covers up to $750,000 in overseas medical expenses on its top tier, with unlimited emergency evacuation across every plan. Here is what to check before buying.

Travel Protect360 is HL Assurance's single-trip and annual travel insurance, sold across four tiers β€” Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum β€” with cover that scales up meaningfully as you move up the tiers. As with any travel policy, the headline benefit figures on the insurer's website tell only part of the story; the terms that actually decide whether a claim gets paid sit in the policy wording.

What the plan covers

At its top Platinum tier, Travel Protect360 covers overseas medical expenses up to $750,000 for adults up to age 70, alongside unlimited emergency evacuation, which the insurer applies across all tiers, not just the top one. Trip cancellation cover reaches up to $15,000 for an individual and $37,500 for a family under the Platinum tier, and baggage cover on that tier goes up to $8,000. Travel delay is covered at $100 for every six hours of delay, up to $1,000, with a reduced-threshold 3-hour delay option available as an add-on for those who want compensation to start sooner.

COVID-19 cover is included on the Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers, though not on Basic, and the plan also offers an optional add-on for pre-existing medical conditions, useful for travellers who would otherwise be excluded from claiming for a condition they already have. A frequent flyer miles benefit and the reduced flight-delay threshold are both sold as extras rather than being standard across every tier.

Where the tiers actually differ

The four tiers are not simply the same benefits at different price points; the practical differences buyers should check tier by tier are the overseas medical sub-limit, the trip cancellation limit, and the baggage limit, since these three scale up substantially between Basic and Platinum while emergency evacuation stays unlimited throughout. Buyers who only need modest cover for a short regional trip may find Basic or Silver sufficient, while anyone travelling with dependants, to a destination with expensive healthcare, or for an extended period is more likely to need the higher medical and cancellation limits that come with Gold or Platinum.

Adventure activities are excluded across the plan as published, so travellers planning activities like scuba diving, skiing or trekking at altitude should check separately whether any add-on or alternative plan is needed, rather than assuming general travel cover extends to them.

What governs if there is a discrepancy

The figures above come from HL Assurance's own published product page as it stood in August 2026, and insurers do update benefit tables, tier structures and pricing from time to time. If anything on the marketing page and the policy wording appear to disagree, the policy wording and the full terms and conditions govern, not the summary page, so read the actual policy document, not just the product page, before you rely on a specific figure for a specific trip.

Two documents worth reading in full before buying: the general Travel Protect360 policy wording, which sets out exclusions and claim conditions in detail, and a separate notice the insurer has published specifically addressing coverage during a novel coronavirus outbreak, relevant given the COVID-19 benefit sits within, rather than alongside, standard travel cover on this plan.

What to compare it against

Before choosing any travel plan, including this one, it is worth checking generally what to look for: the actual overseas medical limit relative to your destination's typical treatment costs, whether COVID-19 cover is included or an add-on, the baggage and travel document sub-limits against what you are actually carrying, and whether a pre-existing condition you have is covered as standard or needs the separate add-on. These questions apply regardless of which insurer you end up choosing.

Talk to an advisor

Choosing between the four tiers, and deciding whether the pre-existing condition or reduced flight-delay add-ons are worth the extra premium, depends on your specific trip and health situation. A licensed advisor can help you match the tier to the trip rather than guessing. Find one through the portal's advisor matching, or ask our assistant about any clause in the policy wording.
