Travel Protector Plus Insurance explained: benefits, limits and the fine print
RHB Insurance's Travel Protector Plus is a single-trip plan with high medical and evacuation limits. Here is what it covers, what governs it, and what a buyer should check before relying on it.
Travel Protector Plus is RHB Insurance's single-trip travel policy for domestic and international travel from Malaysia, positioned around notably high overseas medical and emergency evacuation limits compared to many entry-level travel plans, plus an instant online rebate for buying digitally.
What it is, and who it's for
This is a conventional (non-takaful), single-trip travel policy sold in individual, individual-and-spouse (discounted) and family variants. Cover begins 24 hours before departure from Malaysia and applies across domestic and international travel. It sits alongside RHB's Annual Travel Protector product, which is aimed at travellers who make more than a handful of trips a year; Travel Protector Plus is the single-trip version for a specific journey.
Key benefits as published
According to RHB Insurance's own product page and materials:
- Overseas medical expenses β up to RM500,000.
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation β up to RM3,000,000.
- Luggage damage β up to RM10,000.
- Travel inconvenience cover, including luggage damage, travel delay and cancellation, described on the insurer's page in general terms without every specific limit stated.
- An instant 25% rebate for purchasing online or via mobile.
The trip cancellation limit is not stated on the product page itself, and is instead set out in the policy wording and product disclosure sheet β check the specific document for the plan tier you select rather than assuming a figure.
What governs the policy
RHB Insurance publishes more than one product disclosure sheet and more than one policy wording covering this plan and its related annual product, including versions with stamp duty paid and stamp duty waived. Where the general product page and a specific disclosure sheet or wording differ, the disclosure sheet and wording are what actually apply to your certificate β they set out the certified benefit limits, exclusions, waiting periods (where relevant) and the claims process. Confirm which version applies to the policy you are buying, and keep a copy of both documents for the duration of your trip.
Figures above reflect RHB Insurance's published material as retrieved from the insurer's page; travel insurance terms, limits and pricing can change, and the insurer's current disclosure sheet and policy wording override anything summarised here or on the general marketing page.
What to check on any travel plan, not just this one
The same checklist applies whether you are looking at Travel Protector Plus or a competing product:
- Pre-existing condition treatment. Most travel medical benefits exclude a condition you already knew about before the trip; confirm how this policy defines and applies that exclusion.
- The trip cancellation and delay trigger. Ask specifically how many hours of delay, or what type of cancellation event, is needed before a benefit applies, and what the payout looks like once triggered.
- Adventure and hazardous activity exclusions. If your trip includes skiing, diving or similar activities, check whether they are covered as standard or need an extension.
- The claims process and documentation required, including what proof of delay, loss or cancellation the insurer expects, and the timeframe for notifying them.
- How it compares with the Annual Travel Protector option if you expect to travel more than a couple of times in the coming year, since the economics can favour an annual plan over repeated single-trip purchases.
This article does not claim Travel Protector Plus is the cheapest or best-suited travel plan for any particular trip β that depends on your destination, activities and how often you travel. Compare it against other current travel plans at plan comparison, and check how it fits alongside your existing medical and PA cover using our coverage gap check.
Talk to an advisor
A licensed advisor can check the current policy wording against your specific itinerary β destination, activities and trip length β before you buy or before you travel. Find one through the portal's advisor matching, or ask our assistant to explain a benefit or exclusion in the disclosure sheet.
