OneMedical Takaful explained: benefits, limits and the fine print

Etiqa's OneMedical Takaful is a Shariah-compliant standalone medical certificate sold online, with cashless admission and no overall lifetime limit. Here is what the operator publishes, and what to check.

OneMedical Takaful is Etiqa's Shariah-compliant standalone medical certificate, sold directly online and designed as the takaful counterpart to Etiqa's conventional OneMedical plan. It is a straightforward medical card structure rather than one bundled with life or investment components, which makes it worth understanding on its own terms.

What Etiqa publishes about the plan

According to Etiqa's own product page and disclosure sheet, OneMedical Takaful offers:

  • An overall annual claim limit of up to RM160,000, depending on the plan level chosen, across three plan tiers.
  • No overall lifetime limit.
  • Cashless hospital admission, arranged through a single call to a 24/7 hotline for a guarantee letter, rather than paying and claiming reimbursement afterwards.
  • No medical examination required, with approval based on a short set of health questions rather than a full underwriting process.
  • A 5% discount on total contribution when the family joins together as a package.
  • Hospitalisation and cash benefits for specific infectious diseases, including Covid-19, MERS-CoV, SARS, malaria and Zika.
  • Cover through Etiqa's panel hospitals, locatable via the Etiqa+ app, up to age 85.
  • A waiting period on specified illnesses β€” the disclosure sheet names conditions such as hypertension and diabetes β€” of 120 days from the certificate's issue or latest reinstatement date.
  • Pre-existing conditions excluded, per the disclosure sheet.

Etiqa has not published a single fixed contribution rate on the page we reviewed, since the amount depends on the plan level, your age, and whether you take up the family package discount; a separate contribution rate table is published alongside the disclosure sheet for exact figures.

What the disclosure sheet governs

This summary reflects Etiqa's own published material, captured on the date shown in this article. Contribution rates, plan limits and waiting periods are all subject to revision by the operator, and the product disclosure sheet β€” linked above β€” is the document that actually governs your certificate. If a benefit you were quoted, or a claim decision you received, appears to differ from the summary here, the disclosure sheet and the certificate contract take precedence over this article or any marketing material.

What "no lifetime limit" does, and does not, mean

A high annual limit with no overall lifetime limit is a meaningful feature, since it means the certificate does not stop paying once your cumulative claims over the years reach some fixed ceiling β€” a real risk on older-style medical cards with a lifetime cap. It does not mean unlimited cover in any given year; the annual limit (up to RM160,000, by plan level, on this product) is still the ceiling for what you can claim within a single policy year, and room and board or specific benefit sub-limits inside that annual figure can constrain a claim further. Read the disclosure sheet's schedule of benefits for the sub-limits that sit inside the headline annual figure.

What to check generally before choosing a standalone medical card

  • Annual limit versus sub-limits. A high headline annual limit does not tell you the room and board allowance, surgical fee schedule, or specific benefit caps inside it.
  • The waiting period for specified illnesses, and whether any condition relevant to your own health history falls inside it.
  • Panel hospital coverage in the areas you actually live and work in.
  • How pre-existing conditions are defined and excluded, since this affects anyone with an existing diagnosis before applying.
  • Renewal age and what happens to premiums as you age, since a card renewable to 85 will still reprice as you get older.

Not a recommendation

This article describes what Etiqa publishes about OneMedical Takaful; it is not a claim that the plan is the cheapest or most suitable medical card available. Whether the annual limit, waiting period and panel network suit you depends on your own health history and where you live.
